General Description:
A full-time, temporary position for a research technician is available in the Phytopathology and Microbiology Lab at Pace International. The technician is expected to assist the Phytopathology and Microbiology Lab Manager perform standard protocols pertaining to samples submitted for diagnostic purposes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, logging, documenting, processing and evaluating samples submitted for diagnosis. The technician should have a strong understanding of aseptic technique, know how to conduct plant tissue isolations, and be familiar with the process of serial dilution plating and microbial enumeration. Experience working with filamentous fungi and ability to identify fungi using classical morphological techniques is preferred. Additionally, the technician will be expected to prepare agar media for culturing microorganisms and maintain a stock of sterilized glassware, plasticware or other necessary supplies on hand. The technician should be familiar with conventional bright field microscopy, experience working safely with hazardous chemicals, and a working knowledge of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.). The technician should be detail oriented, organized, have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Principal Responsibilities
:
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment such as pipettes, biological safety cabinets, autoclaves, refrigerators, freezers and incubators.
Organize lab materials and participate in routine lab activities such as washing and sterilizing glassware or plastic consumables.
Prepare chemical reagents, buffers, and fungicide solutions.
Prepare liquid and solid culture media for cultivation and maintenance of microorganisms or for conducting microbioassays.
Aid in pathogen diagnostics through accurate recordkeeping and by conducting direct tissue isolations from symptomatic plant samples.
Process environmental swab samples and packinghouse water samples using serial dilution plating.
Assist with lab and field trails, new product development research and data collection.
Provide and effectively communicate pertinent technical information via written and oral presentation to Pace team members.
Other duties as assigned by the Phytopathology Lab Manager.
Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Plant Pathology, Mycology, or Microbiology preferred. Technical or 2-year degree accepted with appropriate laboratory experience.
Additional skills:
Strong working knowledge of standard office computer programs.
Solid and positive inter-personal communication skills.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Working knowledge of general laboratory techniques, including aseptic technique required.
Prior experience identifying filamentous fungi using morphological characteristics a plus.
Ability to speak and write in English.
Solid mathematical skills.
Strong logical and scientific abilities.
Willingness to work overtime and occasionally on weekends.
